A local chess club for anyone who enjoys the game — from first time players to experienced competitors.
The Hermanus Chess Club is a community of chess players based in Hermanus and the greater Overstrand area.
We are a mixed bunch - young and old, beginners and experienced players, serious competitors and people who simply enjoy sitting down over a board and having a game.
There is no need to be a tournament player to join us. If you know how the pieces move, you're welcome. And if you don't, we'll help you learn.
Our Thursday sessions are informal and friendly, with plenty of opportunity to play, learn, analyse games and meet other local chess players.
Chess has been part of the Hermanus community for decades.
While the modern Hermanus Chess Club was formally established in 2019, the game itself has a much longer history in the town. Local players have been playing, teaching and competing for generations.
The club was established with a simple idea: create a place where people could come together and play chess.
Since then, it has grown into a club with players of all ages and playing strengths. Juniors have gone on to compete at provincial, national and international level, while the club's regular tournaments have attracted players from across the Western Cape and beyond.
The Hermanus Chess Club Open, first held in 2023, has become an important fixture on the local chess calendar.
At its heart, the club is still about what chess has always been about: sitting across the board from another person and playing a game.
